Valentine’s Day Teacher’s Lounge Makeover by the PTO

Valentine’s Day is here again, and our PTO transformed the teacher’s lounge into a festive, budget-friendly space filled with handmade décor and thoughtful touches. This is the first installment in a series spotlighting how we decorated the lounge throughout the year, focusing on easy, inexpensive, and changeable displays that protect walls and can be reused for future themes.

For a clear, simple theme we leaned into one four-letter word: LOVE. Using a Cricut, we cut large letters and heart shapes, layered them over coordinating scrapbook paper, and placed them in frames for a polished look. To avoid damaging the walls and to make seasonal swaps effortless, we used Command picture-hanging strips and small hooks—perfect for temporary displays.

We also created a wreath from a grapevine base, embellishing it with feathers, ribbons, hearts, and flowers. The feathers and picks were simply tucked into the wreath, while ribbon, hearts, and florals were secured with hot glue. A painted wooden “W” with polka dots represents the school name; all elements are wired on with floral wire so the wreath is removable and reusable.

Small framed shadow boxes and feather cones added texture and whimsy to the room. For the shadow box, we used heart-patterned scrapbook paper, layered a cupid silhouette cut with the Cricut, and filled the box with tiny plastic hearts. A ribbon tied around the frame finished the piece.

Feather cones were made by wrapping inexpensive feather boas around foam cones and securing with hot glue. These are lightweight, inexpensive, and add a playful element to tables or shelves.

To create a unique flower arrangement, we repurposed picks, feathers, and stems from Christmas decorations—no extra cost. I added some red and pink picks with heart accents and used a wooden “XOXO” found at the Dollar Tree. Small craft floral embellishments from the hobby store are attached with straight pins to wreaths and arrangements for a finished look.

For a homemade touch, a styrofoam wreath wrapped in yarn becomes a backdrop for pinned flower embellishments. We also used printable subway-art and chalkboard-style valentines for framed accents—free printables from popular craft blogs helped with these pieces.

With the lounge decorated, we turned our attention to a student-focused fundraiser: Candy Grams. After a fall candy bar fundraiser, leftover candy bars provided the perfect supplies. Parents, teachers, and students could purchase a Candy Gram to send to a child, teacher, or friend. We sent home a simple order form with each student and also made the form available on the school website for extra orders.

To assemble the Candy Grams, we collected completed order forms and cut them down with a paper cutter. Each form was cut into smaller pieces, and a team of PTO volunteers wrapped each candy bar with a form and secured it—fast, efficient, and fun. The assembly day turned into a social event full of laughter and resulted in meaningful funds for school programs.

Before closing out this Valentine post, here are a few creative Valentine boxes made by students: Garrett’s deer-stand box celebrating hunting and “land to table,” Braden’s army tank honoring the military, and a SpongeBob SquarePants box tied to the movie release. We also packaged cookie pop favors with help from a parent volunteer.

We hope these ideas make decorating and fundraising feel approachable and fun. With a few supplies, some creativity, and volunteer time, a PTO can create a warm, festive teacher’s lounge and a memorable school celebration.
