Is there anything more summery than packing a picnic and heading outside? Even on hot afternoons, evenings often cool down just enough to make a picnic the perfect way to relax and connect with friends and family.

This month we’re co-hosting a virtual progressive picnic with friends, and we’ve curated a simple, delicious summer menu that’s easy to assemble and ideal for sharing.

You won’t want to miss any of these recipes — each course brings something fresh and seasonal to the table.

For dessert this month we’re sharing a bright and easy treat: No-Bake Lemon Bars in a Jar. These individual portions are perfect for a picnic — portable, mess-free, and full of zesty flavor.

We enjoyed this menu under AnnMarie’s lovely outdoor pergola. It’s a cozy spot for a picnic and looks charming with several sizes of string lights woven overhead.

If you’re visiting from our friend’s page in Nebraska or you’re new here, welcome — we’re glad you stopped by. Pour yourself a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and join us for a relaxed summer meal.

AnnMarie and I live across the street from one another and enjoy sharing simple inspiration for home decorating, easy DIY projects, casual entertaining, healthy recipes, and family life tips. Today we’ve focused on picnic-ready dishes that travel well and taste even better outdoors.

Summer Picnic Menu

This picnic features five courses (we’re counting a signature cocktail as a course!) that are light, bright, and straightforward to prepare. The menu balances citrus-forward flavors, crisp vegetables, creamy textures, and a sweet finish.

Cocktail: Citrus Rosemary Cocktail

Tall pedestal glass with a citrus cocktail garnished with a lemon wedge and a sprig of fresh parsley sitting on a table next to a juicer and half a lemon.

Start with a refreshing Citrus Rosemary Cocktail. Lemon and citrus notes are especially inviting on warm evenings, and the herbal touch of rosemary adds an aromatic depth that pairs well with light summer fare.

Appetizer: Cucumber Sandwiches with Cream Cheese

For a light starter, try classic cucumber sandwiches with cream cheese on soft bread. These tea-style sandwiches are cool, delicate, and easy to make ahead. Cut the crusts off and slice into triangles for a pretty presentation that’s easy to pack.

Main Course: Easy Rotisserie Chicken Salad

A croissant stuffed with chicken salad sits on a plate with a bunch of red grapes. A blue cloth napkin is arranged at the top of the plate and wine glasses sit on the table with small wooden baskets.

The main course is a simple rotisserie chicken salad. Using pre-cooked rotisserie chicken saves time while delivering great flavor — mix with crunchy celery, a touch of dressing, and fresh herbs. Serve it in croissants or on your favorite bread for a satisfying picnic sandwich, paired with seasonal fruit.

Side Dish: Creamy Broccoli Salad

A creamy broccoli salad rounds out the menu with crunch and savory-sweet contrast. Add-ins like crisp bacon, sunflower seeds, or a touch of dried fruit make this side both flavorful and texturally interesting — a great foil for sandwiches and cocktails.

Dessert: No-Bake Lemon Bars in a Jar

Finish on a bright note with No-Bake Lemon Bars served in individual jars. They’re easy to assemble, transportable, and perfect for a picnic presentation. We upcycled glass yogurt jars for serving, but small clear cups work well if you prefer disposable options.

We love finishing a meal with something sweet and simple. These lemon bar jars are ideal for picnics, potlucks, and casual gatherings — zesty, creamy, and easy to portion.

If you’re packing for a picnic, consider layering ingredients in airtight containers and keeping chilled items in a cooler until serving. Little touches like cloth napkins, a cutting board for serving, and a few sprigs of fresh herbs elevate the experience without much extra effort.
